I am finding my voice through movement and my journey with Project Equal Arts, EU is the channel.
When I reflected on the questions, Lucas proposed, I was pulled into expressing what Equal Arts is personally for me working with the EU and SEPIE administration.
REFLECTION:
When I first stepped into the world of performing arts, I didn’t just want to dance, I knew I wanted to belong. That desire has shaped every stage of my career, and it’s exactly what pushed me to Project Equal Arts, the initiative of connecting my work with InDance International and the Equal Arts Erasmus (SEPIE) program in Spain, EU.
My entry into dance wasn’t a straight line. Like many artists from underrepresented backgrounds, I navigated racial, economic, cultural, and geographic barriers before I ever found a stage that felt like mine. What kept me going were the mentors who did reflect my identity and the ones who didn’t, but chose to open doors anyway.
Working with the Black Smoke Initiative on Shoot for Stars, the USA, Spain, and the UK reinforced something I carry into every project since: representation for me isn’t just about who’s on stage. It’s about who gets to choreograph, direct, and lead each step of the way.
Project Equal Arts has not asked of me to perform equality, instead I have decided to examine it. Through InDance International’s online capacity building sessions programmed from July to September 2026, I believe we will find a language for questions I’d been living with for years. For example: What does genuine cross cultural collaboration look like, versus collaboration that quietly slides into appropriation?
Thank you for inviting me to take part in this new adventure. InDance International are delighted to be a part of a voice for women and to take small steps to creating more understanding for those who have had limited access to being led by women in the Performing Arts, Dance.
