It has been very enlightening being in direct contact with another female artist, whilst spending time in L’animal, Girona, building on my understanding of myself and my practice.
Inside there are times when I am exploding, similar to nature, as I feel the imbalance between the White Artist and Black Artist in contemporary dance performance/choreographic creation and other times I want to believe we are equal?
Today I was left with a mark on the surface of my soul, when we begun to talk about blackness, colour, stereotypes, equality, fairness, my development and her comparisons were made.
Either consciously or unconsciously, I recognised from white choreographers/artists the scales of discrimination. unfairness, unconscious bias and so forth. Moreover, the need for whiteness to feel as though it should fix my blackness or act like the differences between us do not exist.
